River Events

Downriver Race

FIBArk’s signature event, the Classic Downriver Race is the longest, oldest, most prestigious and perhaps the toughest race in North America. The Downriver Race is truly an athletic marvel and continues to be one of the most respected (maybe even feared) whitewater races.
Hooligan Race

Calling this a whitewater paddling event may be generous, but saying it is one of the most fun events of FIBArk would be right on. The Hooligan Race is open to anything that floats that’s not a boat.
Freestyle Kayak

FIBArk’s Freestyle Kayaking Rodeo is scored on the paddler’s ability to do tricks and maneuvers in a river hole or standing wave. Competitors do tricks such as loops, spins and tricky-woos while trying to combo the moves together to accumulate points based by style, difficulty and how “huge” the moves are.
Raft Rodeo

With all the serious raft races out there today, we almost overlooked the lighter side of rafting. Not anymore. Be ready to put on a show and kick off the freestyle action at the Salida Whitewater Park. Prizes will be awarded for nothing but silly moves.
Raft Sprint

The format for the Bryan Dreher Raft Race will be a R-2 race with at least two slalom gates to navigate. First, all teams will have to paddle a time trial for seeding.
Pine Creek Race

A test of speed, whitewater skills and courage as competitors strive for the fastest line through this powerful and technical section of whitewater!
One or two gates will be positioned in the rapid to increase the level of competition.
Slalom Races

Brought to FIBArk in the fifties, slalom racing requires paddlers to negotiate a course of gates, poles hung three feet apart and suspended above the river, through the Whitewater Park in downtown Salida. The accessibility of the river corridor in Salida makes this event very spectator friendly.
Stand Up Paddleboard

Stand Up Paddling has exploded in popularity over the last few years, and it’s huge here in Colorado. Veteran river rats are rediscovering the adventure of Class I-III rivers that may not pose much of a challenge while sitting down, but when standing up they present a whole new set of challenges and adventure.
Crazy River Dog

Dogs and owners meet us at the boat ramp and listen to the PA. The exact location will be determined by water flow. This fun event celebrates our fearless, dedicated pooches as they retrieve items from the roaring Arkansas River.
